The World Organization of States – International Parliament for Safety and Peace is closely following the latest developments concerning the future of Palestine. An increasing number of European states have expressed their intention to officially recognize the State of Palestine, a step that goes beyond statements of principle and aims to become a concrete political and diplomatic act. Some European Union countries have already taken this step, while others have announced that they will do so during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly.
In stark contrast to this growing international trend, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has signed a plan for the expansion of settlements in the West Bank, publicly declaring that “there will never be a State of Palestine.” Such a statement closes the door to dialogue and, in practice, represents a rejection not only of the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people but also of international law and of the international community’s efforts to achieve a two-state solution.
The WOS-IPSP believes that these opposing positions highlight the gravity of the current situation: on one side, more and more states are recognizing the right of Palestinians to a free and independent future; on the other, Israel’s political leadership is determined to deny that very possibility.
The World Organization of States reiterates that there is no alternative to peace except through respect for the right of peoples to live in freedom and security. The recognition of Palestine by the international community is not merely symbolic but represents a crucial step to reaffirm the values of justice and international legality.
We therefore call upon the member states of the United Nations, and in particular the Arab and Muslim countries, to strengthen this growing movement, to support the Palestinian cause without hesitation, and to oppose with unity and determination any attempt to erase its political existence.
